Kits House was built around 1805 and is in a south facing position beside
Mixtow Pill which is about half a mile upstream from Bodinnick village, on
the eastern bank of Fowey harbour. The beautiful coves of Lantic and
Lansallos Bays are around 2 miles away. Made famous by author Sir Arthur
Quiller-Couch, Kits House was the chosen home of Mr Fogo, the hero of his
most famous romance "The Astonishing History of Troy Town” and there are
connections with Kenneth Grahame, author of “The Wind in the WiIlows", who
was a frequent visitor.
The Lofts were used for storing apples and drying tobacco until they were converted into living accommodation in Victorian days. Both have sloping beamed ceilings and dormer windows in the sitting rooms and double bedroom, with lovely high views downriver and across Mixtow Pill. They provide comfortable and cosy accommodation and are an excellent base for walking, fishing and for boating as visitors can keep a small boat on the foreshore. Although the Lofts are at the top of the house, they open out onto a small sloping garden with seating areas, reached by a few steps from the hall. The Lofts are reached by outside stairs leading to the river, the lower part of the property and parking area.
Each Loft has a living room with river views, a combined television and DVD player and a good sized kitchen area with electric oven and hob, microwave and fridge/freezer. There is one double and one single bedroom (the double room has river views) and a bathroom with shower over the bath in each loft.
Electric radiators provide heating. All electricity is included in the price. A washing machine is available which is shared with Captain's Cottage. There is ample parking. All bed linen is supplied and a travel cot and highchair are available. Pets are not allowed in the Lofts.
A dinghy from a local boatyard can usually be hired and delivered to these properties. Please ask for details when booking as availability in high season is limited.
Fowey is less than a mile by boat or two miles by road via the Bodinnick Ferry. The nearest pub is the Old Ferry Inn at Bodinnick.
